Analysing Resonances

Supervisor: Dr. Olga Trichtchenko

Can extend to MSc?:  Yes

Project Description (Abstract):

Resonant behaviour shows up in many physical systems. In water waves, sometimes when waves of particular frequencies collide and interact, they produce interesting amplified behaviour, often manifested as waves of much larger amplitude. These waves can also often be destructive in nature. The goal of this project will be to use model equations, i.e. simpler equations that describe water waves, and asymptotic methods, to show explicitly what these resonant frequencies are and how they arise. This project will involve a lot of symbolic math calculations.
